Join Dropbox. Get Extra Space—Free. →
Alright, folks. You’ve heard me rant about iDisk and laud Dropbox. Now go join up! Use the link above and you’ll not only give me a few extra megabytes of space, but you’ll get 250 more megabytes for yourself. Why? Because it’s awesome. If you need more convincing, read this. Or this.

About that 120...
Yesterday I asked if anyone had any info on why medium format film is commonly called ‘120’. I knew that the notion that it had something to do with 120 millimeters was simply not true, but I couldn’t seem to find a source for why it had taken on the moniker of ‘120’ in the first place. A few kind folks did some better googling than I did and found the definitive...

Why is 120 film called 120?
Anyone have a link or care to share, if you know, precisely WHY 120 film is called “120”? (If you say 120 millimeters you’re automatically disqualified.) I’m curious about the origin of the name. I know it’s “just called that,” but I assume there must be a reason, and I can’t seem to find anything on it.

“To a large extent, we’ve now handed over our memories of experiences to digital...”
– Tweetage Wasteland : We All Have Photographic Memories I’ve been thinking about this dynamic lately. It’s one of the reasons I almost never bring a digital camera along when I’m out with my kids at the park or wandering around in nature. I stick with an old...

The Crazies ★★★★
I bet some people may take issue with the comparison, but I think The Crazies is just about on par with movies like The Shining. Without a doubt one of the best movies I’ve seen in a while. The acting is solid (and then some), the “scary” moments are not gratuitous or silly—and genuinely scary. The premise, although extreme, is not entirely implausible. The visuals are...

Tumblr's Roots... →
I was googling something today and stumbled across this link by accident. It’s pretty fun to read through and see the progression of how things came to be at Tumblr. I remember when they were still using Wordpress for their blog. Quite a difference a couple years make.

En Dashes (–) and Em Dashes (—) →
Proper usages for both. Now you know. Here’s the gist if you don’t want to read the whole thing (although it’s short): use en dashes instead of “to” to indicate spans of time, e.g., (January–June). Em dashes separate or conjoin thoughts (like a semicolon or comma, but crisper if you ask me), e.g., Go get that — no wait — I changed my mind. Whether or not to add...

Generosity Day
manalive: I propose a national holiday to be held on June 25th of each year—six months from Christmas—in which we all dedicate a day to see how much of the stuff we already own we can give away to those that have less than we do. Nothing is off limits here: clothes, furniture, cars, computers, televisions, airline miles, money, unused gift cards, bicycles, musical instruments, vacation houses…...

The Tumblr Gang Rules
Quick story: On Friday afternoon I noticed that my new theme had been rejected by Tumblr (there must have been something I forgot or whatever; doesn’t matter). The note that the moderator left wasn’t entirely helpful… so after having a long, horrible Friday, and instead of just emailing them asking for clarification like I should have, I posted a slightly snarky post to my Tumblr...
