Pining for JPEG2000.
I’m bummed that the JPEG2000 image format is not supported by all the modern browsers. It’s amazing. I was just tinkering around and produced a 900px wide image that is 64.7kb. This may not immediately seem like an exceptionally small file-size, until you realize that the image is completely lossless. It’s pristine. Perfect. Gorgeous.
To get the same file-size with a normal JPG using ImageReady, I had to use a setting of “60”. And even though that setting is still fairly high, the quality is quite noticeably degraded.
Too bad the modern browser folks can’t get into the truly modern age.
For example, although the image above is not a .jp2 — just a regular ol’ .jpg — if it were a .jp2 it would be HALF the file-size and completely, losslessly, perfect. Sad.
