I like this guy’s take on the fact that there are a million highly skilled amateur photographers out there. I find this a perplexing reality at times. But his perspective is, I think, I good one…
“People often think that it’s hard to make a living as a photographer in these days of cheap DSLR’s and a renewed interest in (digital) photography by the general public. I too, saw this as a problem when I started out, but I didn’t have to, really. Don’t get me wrong it’s still very hard to earn a decent living in such a competitive field as photography. But I don’t feel that has a lot to do with the large group of photo amateurs.
If you are delivering mediocre quality and service, you will have a hard time paying the bills. There’s thousands of talented amateurs out there that will kick your ass. But if you are the kind of pro that is constantly improving his/her photography, give great service and have a creative vision, the times aren’t so bad at all. Because all these photo enthusiasts will appreciate your talent, knowledge, creativity and service. There have never been more people who know enough about photography to see how much skill, vision and hard work goes into a good picture.”
