I think Flickr (and really the way images are viewed on the internet in general) has had a marked adverse effect on how we’ve come to view—and to make—photographs.
This is probably obvious to everyone, but I realized tonight that many photographs that would look AMAZING as large prints simply don’t look all that good on Flickr. They lose their mystique and end up looking just ordinary. When in fact, if viewed properly, they would potentially be quiet impressive. Certain images just don’t grab your attention on Flickr the way they would if they were a 40x60” canvas print hanging on a wall in a gallery.
It’s sad to me. I think we’ve lost something. This is why I’m determined to start making more prints. Yes, it’s a bit spendier (comparatively), but it is worth it.
I’m always—ALWAYS—more intrigued and delighted by a photograph when I see it in person or even touch it with my hands. It somehow becomes more “real” and that counts for something.
