When critiquing a photographer’s work I sometimes wonder, “couldn’t anyone have taken that shot?”
But I’m realizing, what makes a great photographer is that they DID take that shot.
- maybe it was something just sitting out there waiting to be looked at in the right light, at the right angle…
- maybe it was something completely conceived within the mind of the photographer and then perfectly executed…
- maybe anyone else could recreate it, maybe anyone else could stumble upon it and snap a nearly identical shot…
But there’s a big difference between a photographer who sees a bunch of potentially great shots and a photographer who actually captures those great shots.
It’s so obvious when you say it. But I seem to keep forgetting it.
TAKE THAT SHOT!!
I couldn’t agree more. Well said, Todd. This principle applies in so many areas. It’s far too easy to be the “arm-chair” expert on everything. I get caught in this trap more often than I care to admit. I almost always know that I could have taken “that shot”, but if I don’t do it, I have no ground to stand on. Good food for thought…and action.
