Jenny Vorwaller had some very eloquent things to say about the idea of “home” over at her blog. I think she’s on to something when she says,
…standing outside the frame of normal reference and examining my lifestyle from the vantage point of a foreigner is beautiful. and now i realize that never living anywhere else would be a tragedy, because it would mean never truly understanding my home, or myself, at all.
I think I know precisely what she’s describing. Having travelled a lot for a few years in my slightly younger days, I can relate to the way that being away quickly becomes a lens through which I more fully understand home. I think this is why I’m so eager to get away again. It’s been too long. And home, while still wonderful, has lost its wonder in many ways. It will always be home, but I need a new lens.
(For the fellow Tumblrites out there, Jenny also has a fun Tumblr where she posts nothing but photos and clippings. It’s Beautiful. Check it out.)
