How do you shoot to get the lighting effect on the backlit woman in the white dress on your photo home page? (You can give me details too, aperture, ss, etc.)

Good question! For this I actually didn’t use any special lighting effects at all. The sun was just shining from behind her, up high (you could sort-of simulate this with a big strobe, although the sun tends to look like…well, the sun… which is better). The only trick was getting my exposure settings right so that there was a reasonable balance between blowing everything out with the sunlight, and actually seeing her face (ƒ4 @ 1/320 in this case).

One photo trick that I’ve learned and used often is: don’t be afraid to shoot into the sun. Most conventional wisdom (at least what your grandmother tells you) says to get the sun behind you (the photographer) so that it lights up your subject. This is almost always ugly. If you flip that around and shoot towards the sun, you can get more dramatic results.
