After a few brief hiccups on the first day of the new MobileMe service from Apple, I am so far thoroughly impressed with it. The push syncing works great, and already seems more reliable than the old .Mac sync. Time will tell if it’s truly stable, but I’ve got high hopes.
The web apps at me.com are really where I think this new services shines. After using them for just a few days, I can say that they are probably the most robust feeling web apps I’ve ever personally encountered—and I try pretty much everything. It’s not that they are doing anything particularly crazy or ultra-sophisticated. Fundamentally, it’s all XHTML CSS and Javascript. It’s just that they feel incredibly like “real” applications. There are some factors that are hard to quantify. They just work and feel great. All of the expected conventions are there, from resizing panels, to dragging/dropping, keyboard shortcuts, and of course pixel perfect graphics. It is a wonderful and gorgeous interface. It also has some really great new features. The iDisk is MUCH more useful. The Gallery app is great. It is very close to basically being iPhoto online. There isn’t currently any major image editing capabilities, but it’s still very powerful and as easy to use as iPhoto.
In fact, in each of these apps, there are almost no useful features missing. The more esoteric features from their desktop counterparts are of course missing. But all the essential functionality is there.
Overall, so far, I’m very impressed.
