The new Tumblr iPhone app is out! And it’s great! (Only wish it included support for answering questions, photo replies, and posting multiple photos at a time.) If you don’t have it, go get it!

Here is my “STANDARDS” project, continued. Evolution is occurring….

I like this project in principle. Have you thought of using http://daytum.com to track this stuff? Might be cool.

Syncing Things Across Multiple Computers

esbueno:

I’ve been looking into using Things as a GTD resource.  I’m usually not that organized of a guy, but as of late, I’ve been so swamped that I’ve finally succumb to the idea of using a tool like Things to help me better manage my junk.  The one feature I was really hoping to find was syncing across multiple computers.  Unfortunately, Things doesn’t offer syncing out of the box.

Thankfully, Chris Coyier wrote up a simple step by step for how to use a free service like Dropbox to sync Things across multiple computers.  I think I’ll be making a purchase.

For what it’s worth, I used to use Things and switched to The Hit List because I found its interface and design to be far superior, and it just feels better than Things. And I keep it synced between two computers via Dropbox. Works like a dream. Also, an iPhone version is coming soon (he promises).

This screen (which is forced upon us when we hit the “new audio” page on an iPhone) is silly. Why not let us type in—or now PASTE—a URL to an external MP3 file??

I’m a big fan of McDonald’s Sweet Tea. Don’t judge!

I’m a maniacal fan of their Filet o’ Fish (or as I like to call it, the FishWich), so I’m not judging. ;-)

5 Reasons Why I’m Switching To jQuery From Prototype

esbueno:

This has probably been written up a thousand times, but here are my reasons for switching to jQuery from Prototype.

  1. Speed. You can Google it if you’d like, but it’s very clear that jQuery, and several other libraries, blow Prototype away on speed.
  2. DOM Traversing.  I’m sorry, but it’s downright sexy when I can do this:
    $('ul.grid li:nth-child(3n)').addClass('end');
  3. Community. The jQuery community is bursting at the seams with activity.  I’m hard pressed to go a day without reading about some new jQuery plugin.  The community is active and growing, and I’d be foolish not to pay attention to that.
  4. Active Development. The lastest jQuery version, 1.3.2 was released on Feb 20, 2009.  The latest Prototype release, 1.6.0.3 was released Sep 29, 2008.
  5. Ajax. Check it.  If I’m going to Ajax the crap out of your site, I might want to get a bit picky with what I actually load up.  Thanks to Ajax/load in jQuery, I can target a div to return via Ajax: $("#links").load("/futon #worlds_greatest_list li");

I’ll be honest.  I still prefer Prototype syntax.  I also believe that Prototype better handles arrays, but thanks to jQuery Protify that is kind of a moot point.  As a Front-End Developer/Designer Person Worker it’s my job to stay current and relevant and jQuery is both of those things.  Going forward I’ll be pulling in jQuery instead of Prototype, but I won’t be abandoning ship on personal projects just yet.  I still hold out hope for Prototype/Scriptaculous 2.0.

I’m surprised you aren’t switching to MooTools. From what I’ve read on your site, it seems like it would be more up your alley. It’s much more powerful than jQuery (anything you can do with jQuery, you can do with MooTools, but not the other way around). Check out http://www.jqueryvsmootools.com for a good comparison. (I’m not affiliated with MooTools… just love it. :-)

About that IMAX boycott…

jstn:

Calling for an IMAX boycott

azizisbored:

If you don’t want the whole long story, I did some research online and found this article that explains it. Basically IMAX is whoring out their brand name and trying to trick people. These new “IMAX” theatres are really just nice digital screens with good sound, but they ARE NOT IMAX, in that they don’t have the huge 72 ft gigantic screen which people would expect. However, they still charge $5 more for tickets as they would for the regular IMAX.

The IMAX brand is basically self-destructing, and it’s sad because the IMAX format really is something special (it’s more than just a big screen, it’s big film shot on big cameras). After getting duped last year by AMC Empire I decided I was done with regular 35mm movies blown up to IMAX size, but I’ll still see movies that use the real IMAX format (e.g. Dark Knight), I’ll just go to Lincoln Center where they have a real IMAX setup.

If your local multiplex suddenly offers an “IMAX experience” and they haven’t been under construction for months to put in a 72-foot tall screen, be suspicious; it’s probably just a 2K digital projector. What’s IMAX going to do when all movie theater projectors inevitably go digital? According to /Film, AMC is putting Sony 4K projectors into all their theaters by 2012. Oops.

By the way, my favorite theater in New York for most movies is the Ziegfeld on 54th, which has a single screen with an awesome NEC 2K projector that’s on par with what they’re now calling “IMAX”, but they won’t charge you an extra $5. It also happens to be a cool building that retains its beautiful ’60s red velvet & chandelier interior.

Stupid IMAX.

This sucks on a couple of levels. On one hand, I completely see why folks are pissed about IMAX essentially  misleading people. That is lame and should not be tolerated.

On the other hand—I don’t like the idea of boycott simply brecause I would be devastated to see IMAX go away. My city doesn’t have a “faux-IMAX”, just a real one. The pure IMAX experience is, without question, the most amazing movie-going experience one can have. If you never saw the 20-or-so minutes of The Dark Knight that was actually shot on IMAX film, you truly missed something extraordinary. The clarity, contrast, and amazing sharpness were a marvel to behold. (For those that don’t know, IMAX film is almost 10 times the size of normal 35mm film. For the photographers out there, that’s almost like shooting a movie on 4x5. For the non-photographers: IT’S MASSIVE.)

I don’t necessarily agree that IMAX is self-destructing. I do think they are screwing up big time in the cases where they are being false. However, I think support for IMAX has never been higher. I sincerely hope they don’t derail themselves by stupidly lowering their standards.

What we need is more support for REAL IMAX. Shame on you, IMAX, for diluting what makes you great.

Tumblarity?

jermbob:

I don’t like this. Don’t make it a competition.

What do you think?

See, I suck at this. I forgot to make it so you could even answer!

I agree. I’m not a big fan of the popularity contest. I do like the nice looking numbers graphics and graphs though. :-)

I’ve been using InDesign a lot the last few days. I always love getting into this program. It’s so fun.
I agree! I’ve always felt that InDesign was the best-designed of the Adobe CS apps (from a UI standpoint and the way it “feels” to use it.)

Here’s what I’ve learned from using Daytum so far.

I just got my invite to Daytum yesterday. Loving it so far, though I have some catching up do to. I hope they continue to add new ways to get the data INTO it and out of it. I’m sure they will. I love the concept. Here’s mine: http://daytum.com/bendelaney

THANK YOU TUMBLR!!

THANK YOU TUMBLR!!

Now you can flip between Dashboard pages with the left (←) and right (→) arrow keys.  This is great if you’re trying to navigate the Dashboard with a sandwich in one hand.

Let us know if you catch anything acting funny.

So great!! Keep going! Give us MORE keyboard shortcuts!! :-)

Good Lord, Tumblrville, get over it! You act like this is the first time you’ve ever seen the Oscars!!

…could be that it’s just a few people I’m following. I loved the show too, but jeesh! This is getting ridiculous.

Advertising? On the Dashboard? Really Tumblr?

This is getting lame. Tumblr, I love you as much as anybody and have convinced many friends to join in here. But I’m really not interested in seeing huge ads across the top of my dashboard. If you’re going to pollute this experience for us, couldn’t you at least offer us an option to pay for the service (like Flickr does), so that we don’t have to view your annoying ads and promotions?

Thanks.
